“Decode to Succeed: A Collaborative Test for the Modern Workplace”
ISAT reimagines traditional testing formats to challenge the long-standing reliance on standardized exams as a measure of individual ability. By designing an experience centered on collaboration, it critiques the widespread use of such assessments in schools and Chinese tech companies’ recruitment processes, while highlighting the critical role of teamwork in the modern workplace.
The project adopts a paper-based exam format but disrupts its traditional structure. Four participants are seated in specific positions and presented with the same test. The questions are obscured by moiré patterns, requiring a special decoding card to reveal the content. As participants progress, they realize their individual test papers are incomplete, compelling them to collaborate and share “answers” to complete the exam. This innovative setup transforms the competitive isolation of traditional tests into a cooperative problem-solving experience, underscoring the importance of communication and teamwork.
By simulating an exam scenario, the project seeks to remind those entering the workforce that modern jobs prioritize collaboration over standardized individual performance. It invites participants to rethink existing assessment methods and reflect on the balance between personal abilities and collective contributions.
