POSTER DESIGN + INFOGRAPHIC 2024
Originally conceived as a first project at CalArts, this work draws on a historical wartime fact: during World War I, kelp was burned to extract alkali from its ashes for gunpowder production. Paradoxically, the kelp ecosystem itself demonstrates a complex symbiotic relationship among various marine organisms.
Building on these contrasts, the project envisions a fictional war between “HUMAN EMPIRE” and a “KELP EMPIRE,” where humans seek to conquer the kelp for resources under the pretense of environmental protection. By framing this conflict, the narrative questions conventional perceptions of human-nature dynamics, suggesting new ways to understand the interplay between people, ecosystems, and other living beings.
